About Me

Ciara Foran

I am Ciara Foran, a writer/director and freelance filmmaker.

I am a recent first-class honours graduate of Film and Screen Media at University College Cork. In the past few years, I have completed films both through college and independently through contract work. My work spans a range of media including short documentaries, short fiction, promotional, and music video.

I have worked all over Ireland from Kerry to Kilkenny. I have been passionate about filmmaking from a very young age and have over 10 years of experience editing. Ordinary Distances | Short Film

  • Writer, Director, Casting Director, Producer, and Editor for a short fiction drama film
  • Scouted an international actor for the protagonist. Held auditions for additional roles.
  • Rehearsed with actors and engaged in chemistry building.
  • Worked closely with DOP to achieve the artistic vision.
  • Edited using Final Cut Pro X and Izotope.

Say it With Flowers by BBBlonde | Music Video

  • Director of Photography for a 3-minute music video for Cork artist BBBlonde.
  • Gained experience working with a musician/amateur actor.
  • Built and designed props and handled set design.
  • Filmed using a C100 camera. Used a slider and tripod.

UCC Watersports Promotional Video

  • Director, Producer, and Editor for a 1-minute promotional video for UCC Watersports.
  • Liaised with over 7 clubs and arranged on site filming with each club.
  • Worked with a C100 camera, GoPro, and Insta360 camera.
  • In post-production, enhanced my colour grading skills.

Our Ukrainian Guests | Documentary

  • Producer, Director, Director of Photography, Interviewer, and Editor for a commission for a short documentary on the lives of the Ukrainian guests at Earl of Desmond Hotel Tralee.
  • Conducted research. Wrote legal documentation and interview questions.
  • Recorded footage using a Canon DSLR 5D Mark IV.
  • Edited over 15 hours of footage into a 6-minute narrative documentary.
  • Spread awareness of Ukrainian culture and the reality of life in Ireland for our Ukrainian guests.

Draíocht | Documentary

  • Director, Producer, Editor, and Narration Writer for a short documentary film on modern druidism in Ireland.
  • Applied my ten years of experience editing with Sony Vegas Pro to a practical project and worked with additional software: Final Cut Pro X and Izotope.
  • Spread awareness of stigma faced by modern druids and Pagans.
  • Learned valuable lessons in filmmaking through trial and error and heightened my passion for directing.

Personal Skills

Director

I have directed documentaries and fiction films. I have strong empathy and am acutely observant of human emotions and the mind which aids my ability to connect with and work with actors. My goal as a director is to foster creativity rather than dictate it. I think it is important to be able to adapt and allow for my creative vision to change in line with both the actors’ interpretation of the script and the artistic vision of the director of photography.

Writer

I completed a screenwriting course with screenwriter Gregory Bernstein. I have written short film scripts and worked on feature-length film scripts. I am accredited for my ability to write realistic and natural dialogue. I have an extensive knowledge of psychology and personality which allows me to create authentic characters with emotional depth. I believe that stories are character driven.

Editor

I began editing as a hobby at age ten, so I have years of experience. I use and am familiar with Sony Vegas Pro 18, Final Cut Pro X, and Izotope. However, I would be able to adapt to other editing software. Due to my background in editing, I write and direct with the edit in mind. My editing style is generally fast-paced continuity editing. I also like to include insert shots.

Producer

I have independently produced documentary and fiction films. I am a natural leader and planner. I have experience: writing and distributing consent forms/contracts; location sourcing and liaising with parties affected by filming; planning filming schedules; handling finances; investing in production; marketing films.

Director of Photography

My cinematography is impacted by my directing. I always set up shots and ensure I satisfy my eye for order and symmetry. I completed a course on the laws of photography, and I always draw from this to frame my shots. I have worked with a C100 camera, Canon DSLR, GoPro, and Instax360.

Other Skills

I am proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Powerpoint, Google Drive, Google Word, and Google Forms. I am a very organised person and keep detailed information on all productions on Google Drive. I keep backups of all footage on external hard drives.
